If you only track one number for a youth pitcher, track strike percentage. Not ERA, not strikeouts, not velocity.

Here's why, and what the rest of the numbers are actually telling you.

ERA is the worst statistic in youth baseball

Three problems, each disqualifying on its own.

It measures the defense. A pitcher gets a ground ball to short — exactly what he was trying to do — and the shortstop boots it. At 11U that happens constantly. Earned-run scoring is supposed to correct for it, but that requires a volunteer parent to reconstruct the inning as it "should have" gone, which nobody does accurately.

The sample is far too small. A youth pitcher throws maybe 25 to 40 innings a season. ERA needs hundreds before it means much. One bad inning — and every young pitcher has one, usually featuring four walks and an error — can move a season ERA by two full runs.

The earned/unearned call is a judgment. Same problem as hit-or-error on the hitting side, made by the same untrained scorer.

Win-loss is worse still and needs no explanation.

Why strike percentage is the one that matters

At youth level, most runs are not scored on hits. They're scored on walks, hit batters and errors — free baserunners who then advance on wild pitches and passed balls.

Which means the pitcher's most valuable skill isn't stuff. It's the ability to put the ball in the zone repeatedly.

Strike percentage = strikes ÷ total pitches. Rough guide:

  • Under 55% — walks will dominate every outing. This is the thing to fix, before anything else.
  • 55–60% — competitive, still running deep counts.
  • 60–65% — good. Most innings stay under control.
  • Over 65% — genuinely advanced for youth baseball.

It requires no scorer judgment, needs no defense, and you can count it yourself from the stands with a clicker.

First-pitch strike percentage

The best single sub-metric under the hood, and almost nobody at youth level tracks it.

Getting ahead 0-1 rather than falling behind 1-0 changes the entire at-bat. The hitter becomes defensive, the pitcher can use the whole zone, and the count doesn't spiral into a walk. Across all levels of baseball, outcomes after 0-1 are dramatically better for the pitcher than after 1-0.

Target roughly 60%. If a young pitcher improves nothing else all winter but this, their season changes.

Whiff rate — swings and misses ÷ total swings

This is the one that measures actual stuff: whether the pitch is genuinely hard to hit.

It's clean data — no defense, no scorer, no luck. And it separates two pitchers who look identical on a stat sheet: the one striking kids out because he throws hard and misses bats, versus the one striking kids out because eleven-year-olds swing at everything.

The second kind stops working around 13U. Whiff rate tells you which you have, years before the results do.

Pitches per inning

An efficiency measure that matters more in youth baseball than anywhere else, for one reason: pitch count limits.

A pitcher averaging 15 pitches per inning goes four or five innings. One averaging 25 is done after two, regardless of how well he's throwing. Under Little League's pitch-count rules, efficiency literally determines how much your kid gets to pitch — and how many rest days he owes afterwards.

It's also the single best argument for pitching to contact rather than chasing strikeouts. A three-pitch groundout is a better outcome than a six-pitch strikeout, every time, at every youth age.

Walk rate, and the honest version of strikeout rate

Walks plus hit batters per inning is the cleanest damage indicator at this level. Under 1.0 is solid. Over 2.0 and the game is going to be long.

Strikeout rate is the one parents love, and it's the most misleading. Strikeouts at 10U and 11U are heavily a function of the hitters, not the pitcher — a lot of young hitters strike out against anyone who can throw the ball over the plate. A pitcher's strikeout rate typically falls off a cliff at 13U when the field gets bigger and hitters get better.

Of the two, walk rate is far more predictive of who's still pitching at sixteen.

What stabilizes fastest

The same research that applies to hitting applies here, and the ordering is what matters:

  • Strikeout rate — around 70 batters faced
  • Walk rate — around 170
  • Ground-ball rate — around 70 balls in play
  • ERA and batting average against — hundreds of innings, effectively never at youth level

A youth pitcher might face 150 batters in a season. So by the end of a full year you have a rough read on strikeout tendency and essentially nothing on run prevention.

Meanwhile strike percentage, first-pitch strike rate and whiff rate are all measured per pitch — hundreds of them per outing. Which is exactly why they're usable when nothing else is.

Velocity, briefly

Velocity at youth ages is mostly a maturity measurement. The kid who throws hardest at twelve is usually the kid who grew first, and the gap closes.

Command, strike-throwing and repeatable mechanics predict a fifteen-year-old pitcher far better than a radar reading at twelve does. Chasing velocity early is also how young arms get hurt: max-effort throwing, more of it, in a body that isn't ready.

What to track from the stands

Four tallies, one sheet of paper:

  1. Strikes / total pitches
  2. First pitch — strike or ball
  3. Swings and misses
  4. Walks + hit batters

You'll learn more from those over three outings than from a full season of ERA — and none of it depends on whether the second baseman was paying attention.

And the number that matters more than all of them

Pitch count, and days of rest.

It's the only figure on this page with a health consequence attached. If your child pitches for both a town team and a club team, the two coaches cannot see each other's counts — one parent has to add them up, and that parent is you.
