Ask around any Little League field in Massachusetts and you'll hear it: curveballs wreck young arms. It's repeated by coaches, parents, and plenty of well-meaning league officials.
The research doesn't support it — and believing it may be putting your kid at more risk, not less.
What the biomechanics actually show
The American Sports Medicine Institute has spent decades measuring what pitching does to young arms. When Dr. Glenn Fleisig and Dr. James Andrews put youth pitchers through motion analysis, they found that pitch type made no meaningful difference to elbow and shoulder stress. The torque generated by a curveball and a fastball is comparable — and that relationship holds for kids the same way it does for adults.
A separate ASMI study following youth pitchers over ten years was unable to demonstrate that throwing curveballs before age 13 increased injury risk.
If anything, the fastball is the harder pitch on a young elbow. It's thrown at maximum effort, and it's thrown far more often.
So why does the myth persist?
Because there is a real association — it just isn't causal in the way people assume.
One national survey found that youth pitchers who threw curveballs had roughly 1.66 times greater odds of arm pain. That sounds damning until you ask who throws curveballs in the first place.
It's the best pitcher on the team. The kid who starts every week. The one who also plays for a travel program, pitches in the town league, and throws in a showcase over the summer. The curveball isn't causing the arm pain — it's a marker for the workload that is.
What actually hurts young arms
The evidence here is not subtle. Adolescent pitchers who needed elbow or shoulder surgery were 36 times more likely to have routinely pitched with arm fatigue.
The risk factors that consistently show up:
- Pitching while already tired. By far the biggest one.
- Pitching on consecutive days without adequate rest.
- Playing on multiple teams with overlapping seasons — town ball and a travel program at the same time.
- Pitching more than one game in a day.
- Throwing year-round with no real offseason.
There's a structural reason this matters so much at these ages. The growth plates in a young pitcher's elbow and shoulder stay open until somewhere between 14 and 17 years old. Repetitive stress on an open growth plate can permanently alter how the bone develops. That's not a sore arm you rest for a week — it's a change you don't undo.
The numbers that actually matter
Little League's pitch count rules and the MLB/USA Baseball Pitch Smart guidelines exist because of this research. Daily maximums:

And the rest requirements, which get skipped far more often than the limits:
- 66+ pitches — 4 calendar days of rest
- 51–65 pitches — 3 days
- 36–50 pitches — 2 days
- 21–35 pitches — 1 day
No pitcher under 14 should throw on consecutive days after reaching 36 pitches.
So when should a kid throw a curveball?
Our answer: hold off until around 14 — and not for the reason everyone assumes.
This is a development argument, not an injury one. The evidence above says pitch type isn't what hurts arms. But a 14-ish line is where most good coaches land, for reasons that have nothing to do with ligaments:
A pitcher who can't locate a fastball has no business spending reps on a breaking ball. Command is the skill that carries. Everything else is decoration on top of it.
The curveball is a shortcut. At eleven, a mediocre curve gets outs — hitters that age will chase almost anything that moves. So the kid throws it more, and more, and stops developing the pitches that actually matter at sixteen. Coaches see this constantly: the 12U star with a big curve who can't get anyone out at high school because he never learned to command a fastball down and away.
By 14 the foundation is usually there. Better body control, more consistent mechanics, and enough command that a breaking ball becomes a third weapon rather than a crutch.
The order we'd teach
- Fastball, to both sides of the plate. Not velocity — location. In and out, up and down, on purpose. This is the whole job for years, and it is not boring if it's coached well.
- Changeup. The most underused and most valuable pitch in youth baseball. Same arm speed, same delivery, slower ball. It's safe, it's effective at every level, and it teaches a young pitcher that deception beats movement.
- Cutter. A useful bridge — thrown with essentially fastball arm action, so there's no wrist-supination habit to unlearn, and the small late movement is enough to break barrels. It gets a pitcher comfortable moving the ball without the mechanics a curveball demands.
- Curveball — around 14. By then it's an addition to a real repertoire rather than a substitute for one.
A 13-year-old who can locate a fastball on both edges and sell a changeup is far more advanced than one with a good curve and nothing else — and he'll be the one still pitching at seventeen.
What to actually ask your league
If you want to protect your kid's arm, the questions worth asking aren't about pitch selection:
- Does the league track pitch counts, and who enforces the rest days?
- If my kid plays town ball and travel, is anyone counting the total across both? This is the gap almost every injury story runs through — two organizations each staying under the limit, one arm absorbing both.
- What happens when my kid says his arm is tired? The answer should be that he stops, without negotiation and without it costing him his spot.
- Is there a genuine offseason? Two to four months without competitive throwing is the standard recommendation.
The curveball is the easiest thing to worry about because it's visible. The real risk is quieter: a tired eleven-year-old on a Sunday afternoon, pitching his second game of the weekend, because nobody added up the two numbers.
