Check before you spend. AAU sets no bat restriction at 13U and below, and many club events accept a USA-stamped bat — so the common assumption that travel ball forces a USSSA purchase is often wrong. USSSA's own tournaments do require the 1.15 BPF stamp.

Buying in Connecticut

Baseball in Connecticut starts in cold weather. Composite barrels should not be swung below roughly 50°F — the resin gets brittle and the barrel can crack, and every manufacturer says so in the warranty. If this will be the only bat, used from the first freezing practice through July, an alloy or hybrid is the safer purchase here.

Two-piece composite, big barrel, and it holds bat speed in the -10. One caveat for a New England family: the barrel is full composite, so it should not be swung below about 50°F. It is the best bat on this list once it warms up, and the wrong bat for a March practice — if this is the only bat, look at the alloy-barrelled options below it.
